Work Experience/RAP

Over the past 4 years, the Work Experience program has become a very valuable program for many students. Not only can students earn credits by volunteering in various classes at Christ the King High School and at other places including the swimming pool, fire hall, hospital, Seniors’ care centre, etc., many students are now earning extra credits through their jobs after school. Students can earn up a total of 30 credits in Work Experience 15, 25 and 35. Fifteen of these credits can be applied to the basic 100 credits required for a High School diploma. Numerous students are also earning additional credits to be applied to the unique CTK Scholarship which rewards students who earn more than 130 credits in their high school career. There is a one-credit course entitled Workplace Safety Systems (HCS3000) which must be completed before beginning the Work Experience program.

Recently a number of students have begun their trade apprenticeship while still in high school. The Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) is relatively new at STAR Catholic Outreach but is becoming another popular option for students. By planning their high school program carefully, students are able to go to school at their work site during the school day. Not only can students earn credits they are also paid an hourly wage. In addition, these students are accumulating hours toward their apprenticeship hours. There are 2 one-credit Safety courses which must be completed prior to beginning the registered Apprenticeship Program.

Both of these programs are available through the STAR Catholic Outreach School. The Work Experience/RAP Coordinator is readily available to speak to students and is eager to introduce them to these two valuable high school programs.
