Alberta High School Requirements

Alberta High School Diploma Graduation Requirements

**Students must complete a minimum of 100 credits to graduate with an Alberta High School Diploma**

 THE FOLLOWING IS A LIST OF MANDATORY CORE COURSES:

 1. ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS – 30 LEVEL

  • English Language Arts 30-1 or 30-2

2. SOCIAL STUDIES – 30 LEVEL

  • Social Studies 30-1 or 30-2

3. MATHEMATICS – 20 LEVEL

  • Math 20-1, Math 20-2, or Mathematics 20-3

4. SCIENCE – 20 LEVEL

  • Science 20, Science 24, Biology 20, Chemistry 20, or Physics 20

5. PHYSICAL EDUCATION 10 (3 Credits)

6. CAREER AND LIFE MANAGEMENT (3 Credits)

7. 10 Credits in any combination from:

  • Career and Technology Studies (CTS)
  • Fine Arts
  • Second Languages
  • Physical Education 20 and/or 30
  • Locally Developed / Acquired and Locally Authorized Courses in CTS, Fine Arts, Second      Languages, Knowledge and Employability or IOP
  • Knowledge and Employability or IOP occupational courses
  • Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP)

8. 10 Credits in any 30 Level Course (in addition to a 30 Level English Language Arts and 30 Level Social Studies)

  • 35 Level Locally Developed / Acquired and Locally Authorized Courses
  • 3000 Series; Advanced Level in Career and Technology Studies courses (i.e:  Legal Studies 3010)
  • 35 Level Work Experience
  • 30-4 Level Knowledge and Employability course or 36 Level IOP Course
  • 35 Level Registered Apprenticeship Program
  • 30 Level Green Certificate Specialization
  • *Francophone students may use 30 Level English Language Arts courses to meet, in part, this 10-credit requirement.

French First Language – Francophone Graduation Requirements are the same as the English Graduation Requirements above; however, Francophone Graduates must also complete Français 30 or 30-2.

9. Once you’ve met the course requirements listed above, you can earn the remainder of your 100 credits with whatever courses you’d like, with the following restrictions:

  • Second languages: You can earn as many credits as you’d like, but can only use 25 credits toward your diploma requirements.
  • Work Experience: Again, earn as many credits as you’d like, but you can only use 15 credits toward your diploma.

To receive credit for a course, you need a final grade of 50% or higher.  For courses with a diploma examination, your final mark will be the average of your school mark and diploma exam mark.
